Description
Genre: Steampunk Oriented (soundtrack/symphonic/industrial/darkwave/dark cabaret/neo-voctorian/post-rock/others)
Quality: 1CD: mp3@160 2CD:AAC@avr128
Disc 1:
Reinhold Heil - This track was taken from the score of the film "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer". This is the opening music during a montage of Paris circa 1700's and it grabbed me upon seeing the film for the first time. I thought it would set a nice tone for the rest of the album.
Viral Millennium - One of the newest artists to join Gilded Age Records. These guys are essentially Steampunk Industrial-Metal. A niche that has been previously left empty. They have a nice mix of straight up metal songs and more ambient neo-classical material like this song.
Vanessa Mae - I first heard this song on a Last.FM Steampunk playlist. I have to agree there's something about this song that suggests epic adventures in a 19th Century setting.
Murray Gold - The new Dr. Who theme is just dripping with Steampunk overtones, from the added orchestrations and more driving nature of the song, to the already Steampunk as hell Theremin in the original theme.
Alexander Mosolov - This piece was composed in 1926 during Stalins reign of Russia, and was created as a representation of the Industrial Revolution and its effects on Russian society. A few years later Mosolov was declared an enemy of the state and all of his works were banned.
The Protagonist - Swedish composer Magnus Sundstrom is one of my favorite Neo-Classical artists. His bombastic epic style lends it self perfectly to a Steampunk setting. This piece always makes me think of a massive Victorian army razing a city to the ground (or a massive fleet of airships preparing for battle).
In the Nursery - One of the oldest modern Neo-Classical groups, and one of the most prolific as well. This track comes from their last album ERA, and is another piece that makes me think of war in the 19th Century, though more in an "aftermath of the battle" way.
Chris Vrenna - Taken from the soundtrack to American McGee's "Alice". A great Steampunk piece from this former NIN collaborator.
Joe Hisaishi - While Joe Hisaishi has done many Steampunk oriented soundtracks for Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, his theme for Laputa: Castle in the Sky is his most evocative of the style.
Phillip Glass - The main theme of the quasi-Steampunk film The Illusionist. Phillip Glass's trademark rhythmic string arrangements never sounded so mysterious as they do here. The whole soundtrack is quite excellent and I recommend it.
Alexandre Desplat - Taken from the score of The Golden Compass. This is the piece that plays during the airship ride.
Gary Schyman - Entrance music to the underwater city of Rapture from the video game "Bioshock".
Ez3kiel - This french group makes some very experimental old world inspired music. This piece in particular is quite Steampunk imho.
Theremin Noir - Theremin, Accordion, and Violin set to a 3/4 waltz beat... how much more Steampunk can you get?
Devotchka - While this group have a rather large amount of tracks I like to spin in my old world sets, this track in particular is a beautiful waltz that feels like it fell out of Yann Tiersen's score for the film Amelie.
Dr. Steel - I wanted to pick a song that I thought represented all of Dr. Phineas Waldorf Steels influences well. I ended up going with an instrumental that I can only explain as Faith No More meets Oingo Boingo and Cab Calloway. Maybe a bit more 20's than 1880's, but it still fits.
The Masquerade Project - This is a project that I was made aware of via Brass Goggles Steampunk Forums. It was one of the first bands I heard try to do Steampunk music after I started working on my Vernian Process material, and I thought it captured the tone of Steampunk quite well.
Nick Cave - Taken from the score of "The Assassination of Jesse James, by the Coward Robert Ford". This entire score has a really cool minimal broken down feel to it.
Balmorhea - I don't know anything about this project other than they are an instrumental indie rock group from the East Coast. But hey... Pianos and Typewriters! How can you go wrong?!
Dario Marianelli - Either Balmorhea got their idea for the piano typewriter combo from this song, or this Hollywood composer ripped them off for his score to the film "Atonement". Or they both came up with the idea at totally different times. The world maynever know?
John Barry - One of the greatest composers of this age, and his theme to the 60's Victorian black comedy "The Wrong Box" just felt so perfect on this album.
Steve Jablonsky - This is the ending theme to the film "Steamboy", and is one of the most epic and rousing pieces of music I've ever heard (I just wish it was a few minutes longer).
James Horner - Once again a bit later than the Victorian era, but I had to show some love to our Dieselpunk/Pulp cousins. This theme is another one of my favorite epic/rousing scores, and ends the first disc with a bang!
Disc 2:
Voltaire - Usually viewed as the Weird Al or They Might be Giants of Goth. This song cements Mr. Voltaire in my Steampunk book of names. Most of his work is novelty comedy songs, however this one actually has a poignant and meaningful message about the effects The Industrial Revolution had on society.
Paul Roland - ATTENTION EVERYONE! Paul Roland predates all Steampunk music! This song written in the early 80's is about an attempt at flight in a 19th Century setting. His song "The Great Edwardian Air-Raid" was a close second for inclusion as well.
Unextraordinary Gentlemen - Los Angeles based group who write Victorian Fantasy music in a minimal avante-garde style.
Rasputina - This is probably my favorite song by this group. It always makes me think of a Lewis Carrol like story. Actually the LP this comes from makes me think of Lewis Carrol in general.
Hannah Fury - Lovely Pittsburgh based musician who evokes classic Kate Bush mixed with experimental Trip-Hop beats.
Emilie Autumn - I honestly don't like most of her music, but this song is a perfectly charming slice of dark chamber music.
The Dresden Dolls - Everyone knows this band by now, and everyone knows this song. A coin-operated person is pretty damn Steampunk imho.
Johnny Hollow - This song reminds me a bit of Rasputina. It has some great dark cello work, and really nice ambiance. Taken from their latest album.
Bat For Lashes - Indie artist who also reminds me of Kate Bush. The harpsichords sold me on this song within ten seconds of hearing it.
Mr. Joe Black - Another recent addition to the Gilded Age Records group of artists. UK based Joe Black is like a psychotic blend of Tom Waits, Danny Elfman, The Tiger Lilies, and Nick Cave.
The Tenth Stage - Yet another great addition to the growing roster of Gilded Age Records artists. Australian based The Tenth Stage's new album Grand Guignol is just chock full of demented cabaret influenced songs. This song in particular is like a music box out of control. The lyrics are about Cinderella plotting revenge against her step-sisters. lol
The Clockwork Dolls - The second band to join Gilded Age Records, and one of my closest collaborators. This is the remix I created for their song Impartial.
Vernian Process - This is my stuff obviously. This songs lyrics are a cautionary tale, warning of the dangers we face depending on machines to do everything for us. The lyrics were co-written by a few members of Brass Goggles. This is a perfect example of the collaborative nature of Vernian Process.
Abney Park - This is the first song I have heard by Abney Park that I can say 100% undoubtedly is Steampunk to its core. It's also nice to hear them moving into other styles of music.
The Cassettes - This band is now a regular old indie rock band, but on their last album they were a Indie Steampunk Rock band, and this song shows why.
Duke Special - Indie Pop gone Victorian. Similarities abound with late 80's/early 90's bands like Magnetic Fields, The Divine Comedy, etc.
Ghostfire - Yet another new artist I have welcomed into the ranks of Gilded Age Records. These guys have a bright future, if the songs they have recorded already are any sign. A great mix of Britpop/Ska/New Wave and Indie Rock.
Humanwine - dark gypsy/cabaret/punk./ Humanwine are really fun. Check them out if you're a fan of stuff like Gogol Bordello, and Devotchka.
The Legendary Shack Shakers - Victorian Circus Psychobilly with Americana overtones. Quite a mouthful. You just kind of have to hear it to understand.
Magpie Killjoy - Magpie is the founder of Steampunk Magazine, and he has recorded a demo EP for his solo work. This is a great song about a couple who are torn apart by a witch hunt.
Beirut - Another group like The Arcade Fire, Cloud Cult, etc. that are taking Victorian/Old World aesthetics and applying them to epic Indie Rock styles. This is probably their most famous song, and this mix in particular is rather rare.
